With their modern, powerful engines, sophisticated avionics and elegant, computer-designed aerodynamic structures, it may seem to some that today's aircraft are not affected by ground icing to the same extent as the aircraft of yesteryear. After all, de- and anti-icing fluids permit takeoff in more austere weather, and facilities and equipment are often readily available. But, we should not be fooled. Icing can be as deadly today as it ever was and, as a review of this issue will reveal, presents a continuing threat to aviation safety.
