CWO Dan McCoy joined the Canadian Forces in 1975 as Weapons Technician (Air). Following basic and trades training he was posted to 419 (Moose) Sqn Cold Lake working on the CF-5 aircraft. After a standard armament tour of Maintenance, Air Ranges and Explosives Storage he returned to 419 Sqn as the Load Standards Crew Chief. After a total of 7 years with "the Moose" he was posted to 10 Field Technical Training Unit (10 FTTU) to develop and stand up the training curriculum for the new CF-18 aircraft. Following developmental, instructional and standards tours with the unit, he was posted to BFC Bagotville Base Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering (BAMEO), where he supervised second line maintenance facilities before being selected for the year long French training course. Upon graduation, he returned to Bagotville BAMEO where he continued second line maintenance as well as being appointed the EOD Chief for Centre 8, responsible for Eastern Quebec and the South Shore.

1991 saw a return to Cold Lake, with a second posting to 10 FTTU, followed by a tour with the BAMEO as the Air Ranges and Load Standards WO. In 1994, CWO McCoy was selected for a 1 year posting to Knin, Croatia, in the former Yugoslavia. Serving as the Sector South Air Liaison Officer with the United Nations Protection Force, he was responsible for liaising with the local government to coordinate all flights in the sector. In 1995 CWO McCoy returned for his third and final posting to Cold Lake, serving at 1 Air Maint Sqn, (1AMS) as the Operations (Planning) MWO. This was followed by a tour as the Mechanical Production Manager and a final Cold Lake experience as the 1 AMS Operations Officer.

In 2000 he was posted to 1 Canadian Air Division, Winnipeg in the Armament and EOD cell, responsible for Wing and Unit Safety Surveys as well as providing staff advice on Air Weapons and Explosives issues. Upon promotion to CWO in 2002 he was posted as the Sqn Chief Warrant Officer (SCWO) to 430 Sqn (les Faucons) at BFC Valcartier, where he developed a strong appreciation for army and Brigade level functions. After completing his SCWO tour he was posted to Ottawa as the senior career manager for Aviation Technicians. In 2007 he was selected for his current position as the Directorate of Flight Safety Chief Warrant Officer.

CWO McCoy was admitted to the Order of Military Merit in Oct 2000. He has spent several years as an active SCUBA Instructor, and more recently spends any spare time he has swearing at wayward golf balls.
